Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Village books has been in business since 1994. We have owned the store since October 2004.
What is your primary product or service?
Village books is a general interest bookstore carrying a wide assortment of books, audiobooks & music cds, vinyl LP's and comic books and graphic novels.
We will purchase good quality books, music CD's, vinyl LP's and comic books. You can use the cash in the store on any item (we sure hope you do!) or you can take the cash out the door with you.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
We were looking for a slower pace in life and have always been readers. This store was for sale so we thought we would take a chance on buying it. We had no background in owning a business. We both worked in retail in our much younger days.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
We offer a CLEAN, well organized bookstore with personal service. We have a wide variety of books both current and out of print. We have the largest selection of non-fiction books in the area. Our science fiction/fantasy section has been called the best between Eugene and San Francisco. We also carry older comic books, new graphic novels and music CD's and LP's. No other store in the area has such an extensive and wide variety of reading and listening items. And most items are discounted from their original retail price.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have only one location at this time.
Provide detailed directions to your location
We are located in the WinCo Shopping Center on Barnett Rd in Medford. We are just about 5 minutes west of exit 27 off of I-5. We are next to Payless Shoe Source, behind the Jack In The Box restaurant.
What type of payments do you accept?
Cash is king but we accept all credit/debit cards except American Express. Checks are also accepted. Picture I.D. is required for non cash purchases.
Which areas do you service?
Customer base is the Rogue Valley but we have a large group of repeat customers coming from Seattle on down to San Francisco. Many visitors to the Ashland Shakespeare Festival make a point to visit our store when they come to Southern Oregon for the plays.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Owners are Gary Guthmueller & Karen Polsgrove.
We have recently added a new "employee" -- Winston the Cat. On some days he's very friendly, on other days, you're taking a chance petting him!
What are your hours of operation?
Monday-Thurs and Saturday 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM
Friday 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Sunday 11:00 AM -4:00 PM
We are usually closed a couple Sundays a month so call before coming.
We close on most major holiday's.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
While we love to hear our nice our store is in looks, organization and stock, the greatest compliment is when we make a sale.
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
Tradition is the illusion of permanance.
